Editorial Reviews from Amazon.com

Album Description
The sound of the sape brings out the dignity in people and connects them to the forest. It also invokes the Spirit of the Dayung during traditional ceremonies, which are used to heal people and  monitor the condition of the community.  The first tracks of this album were recorded by Tim Norris at the house of Jok Jau Evong in Marudi, Malaysia. The remaining tracks were recorded by Jok Jau himself at various times. The multiple voices are all those of Jok Jau as he over-dubbed multiple tracks onto one tape. There is a small loss of quality for the final tracks, but we feel that the music suffers little for this.

About the Artist
Jok Jau Evong is an artist and activist of outstanding character. His tireless efforts to preserve and build the culture of the Kayan people in Borneo have been noticed by many. (For almost a decade, the Malaysian government did not allow him to leave the state.) The Borneo Project gives constant support to his efforts for the people and forests of Borneo. He holds the 'Conde Nast Traveler's Environmental' award. Now he has published a CD of the music of his people. As requested by Jok Jau Evong, all of the proceeds from this disc will go to the Uma Bawang Residents Association. UBRA is dedicated to cultural preservation and the development of sustainable futures for the Kayan people living in Uma Bawang-Keluan and the surrounding rainforests of Borneo.

Music from the Forest: Kayan Sape
By Jok Jau Evong
LongRoad Records, 1999

"'Music of the Forest' by Jok Jau Evong is a rare gem. It introduces the music of the Kayan people of Borneo. Played on a lute-like instrument called a Sape, the music hints at generations of life lived in and among the world's oldest rainforest. The gental, at times hypnotic, melodies provide an ambient back-drop for relaxed listening, reading or meditating. Fans of the radio program 'Echos'are sure to appreciate this disk." - Dan Scollon, Redding, CA
